Wake Up London is a community of young people who come together to practice mindfulness in the midst of everyday life. We are inspired by the teachings of Zen Buddhist master and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh and practice together in order to take care of ourselves, nourish joy and contribute to a healthy and compassionate society. Our practice is based on cultivating awareness of the breath and living deeply in the present moment, aware of what is happening within and around us. This practice helps us to release the tension in our bodies and feelings, to live life deeply and more happily, and to use compassionate listening and loving speech to help restore communication and reconcile with others.
2 Minute Interview:
How does your workshop relate to being in the NOW?
Wake Up London shares NOW’s passion and energy to promote the practice of mindfulness to others and we aspire to be a place of refuge and support for young people especially. We enjoy exploring creative ways to promote our message through public flash mobs.
What are you most looking forward to doing within your slot at NOW?
We’re looking forward to being part of a NOW event for the first time and connecting with other like-minded people and groups.
Any tips on how the audience can most benefit from your workshop?
Our regular afternoons of mindfulness are on Saturday in central London aimed towards young people aged 16 to 35-ish. Each week, we begin with sitting meditation and mindful walking. We then practice bringing mindful awareness to other activities: listening, speaking, working and tea-drinking. These sessions are facilitated by peer practitioners of the community and we ask for a small donation to cover the rent of the room.
We also organize various other practice sessions during the week and retreats. Do check out more information on our website and join our mailing list for our weekly newsletters.
We hold meditation flash mobs throughout the year in public spaces which are open to people of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels. It’s best to join our group on www.meetup.com/meditationflashmobs to get updates.
At Deptford Lounge:
Wake Up London will host a meditation flash mob outside Deptford Lounge on Saturday 28th June from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. It is part of an initiative to raise public awareness of the importance of meditative practice in our lives and cultivate peace and unity between human beings.
By sitting together in silence, we can enjoy stopping, slowing down, resting and re-connecting our minds and bodies together.
This meditation flash mob invites people of all ages, backgrounds, cultures and religions and any experience levels. We will start and end the meditation with the sound of the bell.
